The world would be a better place if more people started being intellectually brave, like you have here. Kudos to you - not specifically for your position, but for having the courage to stand alone in a peer group saturated with intellectual cowards.
Can't wait to read more of your Substack articles and see where you go from here!
Thank you so much!! To be honest, I still feel very nervous about this post being public. I am so inspired by the overwhelmingly positive and thoughtful feedback!
My mother was a teacher and the regional leader of the NEA back in the 1980s, she walked away from the union back then because it was corrupt, using members dues for political efforts and strangely enough virtue signaling before we even knew what it was. Education has become a pit of vipers in every sense of the word.
Wow! I had no idea the long history of corruption in the unions. I'm just starting to learn about it... to be fair, the union has definitely helped me out in the past. I'm not totally against the idea of it, but just like the entire education system, it is in need of a massive overhaul.
My mother was a teacher of the year back in the late 80s, her masters was teaching values through music, my grandmother was a teacher, principle and assistant director of the district. I say this to clarify it wasn't a passing fad for my family, education was their lives and they hated the union by the early 90s. My dad was an IBEW union member. A very union friendly family.
I work in a public library going quickly down the path of a similar alternate reality. Like you, it would do me absolutely no good to seek union help as they are all in equally happy matrimony with their prescribed ideology. I can only hope to write a resignation letter as poignant and eloquent as this when the time comes. Thank you for standing in truth and understanding that there ultimately is no "my truth" or "your truth." Just truth.
All the best in your future endeavors. The integrity you've displayed here ensures your success. Maybe not of the kind The District might applaud but certainly that which allows you to sleep at night.
I hope you soon fill my inbox with more content of this caliber. Congratulations on setting yourself free.
Thank you for sharing, and I am sorry to hear that the public libraries are just as captured by the ideology. "There ultimately is no "my truth" or "your truth." Just truth." -- 100% on point, my friend!! I'll look forward to reading your letter of resignation when the time comes...
Wonderful thoughtful letter. Sad that you were put in a position where you had to write it. Stay brave. What you have done is a big call, but you clearly will survive and thrive with your outlook.
Kind regards from a fellow rebel in Australia who has refused to bow to the officials promoting the poisonous covid 19 " gene altering therapy. xxx
Valerie, wonderful resignation letter! Unlike TPTB (The Powers that Be) you lay out your case w/ facts, experiential data, your research, etc. ALL in a measured, organized, & thoughtful manner.
You have done a fabulous service for teachers such as you who aren’t as courageous (but may rise up in time bc of you).
As a grandmother with an secondary English teaching degree who has seen the slippery slope since the 1970’s I grieve. I’m a Baby Boomer who actually memorized my “times” tables, read classics, took Latin, learned American history (flaws& all), studied civics, etc.
Thank God my youngest grandchild is a high school senior. If I were a young parent today my child would be homeschooled if I couldn’t afford private.
Thank you for your boldness here.
And for choosing to teach in the first place. May God direct your path forward.
I hate to say this but I don't think that there are any districts that are better, one in our local area is supposedly top ten in nation and yet the conversation I have nightly with my pre-k teacher roomie is almost verbatim the same issues. This letter needs to be printed and left on the bulletin board of every single public school in the nation.
Great letter Valerie, I applaud your showing them that this isn't a knee jerk reaction but a succinctly detailed researched opinion that has intellectual background. This is the same hijacking of thought that has destroyed the medical industry, union and $$ over people.
Recently relocated our family from Snohomish, Wa to Fort Worth Texas for a better educational environment. Highly recommend Argyle ISD for those fleeing Wa state.
School is used to train students to be willing idiots. Anyone who thinks outside the enforced narrative is made to suffer for it. It's been 49 years since I quit school in the 11th grade. I was tired of being lied to. In 10th and 11th grades there was Texas history and American history. I don't remember which one was taught in what grade. I would go to the public library and look through books on American and Texas history to check on things that were being taught in class. Once in 10th grade and once in 11th grade I brought books to class and pointed out to the teacher facts written by historians that were very different from what was being taught in class. Their only answer was that they were teaching what was in the books provided to the school. They weren't required to go outside of that. They teach lies in school. And it is a lot worse now. You are taught in school to follow the narrative. You are not allowed to think for yourself and you are not allowed to speak the truth.
The Gender Ideology crap in Elementary school needs to stop. A friend's daughter cut her hair, and came home panicked and asked her mom if she'd have to stop watching anime and playing video games and doing "boy" things, because she was *definitely* a girl, she just liked those things, but the teacher had asked her if she was trans now that she had cut her hair. I realize that is anecdata, but as someone who recalls even at 45 how stressful 11 already was, this was not an added stressor she should have had to deal with.
One of my nephews has the same problem. He's 7. He's in his own words, very adamantly a boy. He also likes sparkly things and wearing pastel dresses and leggings and has a unicorn backpack. He's the one who has to set boundaries with his teachers, basically, and if it doesn't chill out PDQ, his 6'5" 240 lb Thor-bearded Uncle Mek may have to break out the sewing machine and show up in a dress tailored for someone who would wear, if such a ridiculous thing existed, a 48AA brassiere. (48-38-46, high-fives Sir Mix-A-Lot.) And I will very politely demonstrate that it is possible to be **extremely** male while wearing a dress. ;)
For real though, I would have been meat for the machine myself. I too was into anime, video games, and other stereotypical “boy stuff” like martial arts, sharks and dinosaurs. The teachers are being trained to ask your friend’s daughter and nephew these questions in the name of “inclusivity”... the longer I am out of education, the more I realize I have left a dangerous cult. No child should be forced to question their fundamental reality because they are exploring their world on a path that is not stereotypical for their gender.
The first alarm bell is that we are teaching children to keep secrets from parents starting in Kindergarten. Students are taught to come to teachers if they think that their parents won't be accepting of their chosen identity, which could apparently manifest itself starting in Kindergarten if you are to believe the ideological narrative that extremely young children could be trans. This culture of keeping secrets from parents is clear grooming behavior for sexual abuse, along with some other patterns you may have noticed, such as normalizing sexual behavior. Refer to the experts here: https://www.rainn.org/news/grooming-know-warning-signs
The schools aren't serious about stopping sexual abuse, or they would not be coaching students to keep secrets from parents. There is a real danger in any institution that cares for children of pedophiles and sexual abusers entering the profession for nefarious reasons. We need to take that seriously, not create an environment that welcomes the kind of people that want to talk about sex and gender with young children, the kind of people that want to keep secrets from parents, the kind of people that want to take advantage of those young, malleable minds to inject their perception of reality.
For more, I'd recommend looking into the MAP (Minor Attracted Persons) phenomenon, and how some intellectuals (including teachers) are defending it as a legitimate form of sexuality.
Hello. Thank you for sharing your journey! We are organizing an event the first Saturday in November, and we would love to chat with you to see if you would be interesting in speaking and/or attending. This event will be in the Snohomish area.
I began my teaching career in 1980 and knew the public schools were going down hill back then. I admire your courage on appearing before the board earlier tonight. We have different views but there is certainly room for agreement on the subject of sexualizing students amongst other topics you mention. I'm trying to understand where this school board is coming from but they are sacrificing children in their attempt to be all inclusive. They have made your job as a teacher impossible. Best wishes for your future plans. The district has lost another great teacher and I'm sorry for it!
You may wish to check out and read some of John Taylor Gatto’s books in order to learn about the history of our western school systems.
I attended school beginning kindergarten in 1950 in a Central Valley town in California.
My family moved to Seattle, Washington in 1962 where I attended both Roosevelt and Lincoln High Schools during my last year of high school — 12th grade.
My first job was working in the catalogue division at the UW campus Library where I also attended 2 night school classes at the University of Washington.
(English & French).
I was so appalled by the utter incompetence of those 2 night school instructors, I made one of the best decisions in my 77 years of life.
I said to myself — “Well, I can learn anything I want to learn by reading books about any subject I’m interested and curious about.”
I’ve never regretted that decision.
I avoided another four years of brainwashing propaganda and being indoctrinated by even more lies. Bonus being I also avoided wasting my $ to pay for four more years of mind controlling programming.
In 2006, after retiring from the legal secretarial world, I began my online research journey.
Finally!!!!
I discovered my favorite way to learn. And it was NOT in a classroom situation.
I remember saying to myself —
O. M. G. I’ve been waiting my entire life for this. For this method of learning and pursuing satisfying my curious nature.
Of course that was before cancel culture and wokism struck the herd mind like a plague of devouring piranhas.
Classrooms - just like the working environment - are great for socializing with others. Period.
The very nature of the physical class room set up was adopted intentionally to indoctrinate — not to assist students to actually learn anything useful.
Only one year of online researching taught me that nearly EVERYTHING I was taught about world or US history was twisted by lies of commission or omission.
To give the schools their due — it is probably impossible to teach more than a smidgeon of the thousands of years of history we are aware of at any time.
And I am still finding out more about the nitty-gritty details we’ve been taught.
It’s a never-ending journey of exploration. And not everyone’s cup of tea for sure.
Frankly, I didn’t start out to learn more about human history.
My own journey began with a very simple open-ended question.
Which was — “What is up with all these wars. Why has our history been a continual series of wars? How come there have been wars, wars, & more wars throughout thousands of years?
And the Universe, being the Universe that it is, graciously led me to follow the rabbit down the red pill rabbit hole. Lolol
Learning history in school was as educational as watching CNN to learn the truth about what’s actually happening in the real world.
All by design.
You might also be interested in watching a 5-hour documentary series broadcast by the BBC (another propaganda news station) called - “The Century of the Self” to learn about Edward Bernays (nephew of Sigmund Freud) who referred to himself as the Father of Public Relations. It’s an eye-popping, jaw-dropping account of how advertising was developed in the free-world as a method of using propaganda and brainwashing to sway and steer the masses towards the very situation we are currently facing and dealing with now.
None of this is an accident. Or a mistake. Or an ooopsie.
Another really good source is Aaron and Melissa Dykes’ “TruthStream Media” Bitchute video channel. Their 3-hour documentary called, “The Minds of Men” goes into detail — documenting the last several hundreds of years scientists have been exploring and experimenting on the human body, mind and brain in order to figure out just how our physical brains and bodies are hardwired in order to alter, tweak, and program our minds to fall into line so we can all be controlled by those who wish to do so.
My recommendation to ALL the people in the world is to study psychology.
In particular, psychopathy, narcissism, the dark triad, the Cluster-B borderline personality traits, and especially “The Criminal Mind”.
And absolutely do read any book written by Ian McGilchrist.
Learn about one of Pavlov’s other experiments. Called “Transmarginal Inhibition”. You will understand better the purpose behind the intentional poisoning of our bodies via introducing toxic food, water, air into our environment and why that agenda is the top priority of the powers that should NOT be.
Because, once we gain an understanding of the pathological & criminal mind, we are less likely to be deceived by liars and manipulators and abusive bullies.
And the more likely we will have the courage to stand up to these destroyers — whether in the work place - our own families & communities — in both personal & public environments.
That’s what SHOULD be taught in our schools. THAT would be an education worth investing our time, $ and energy to learning.
So - what have I learned?
To REFUSE to be reasonable with evil.
To spot these manipulators and refuse to excuse or rationalize or justify or submit to their abuse — whether overt or covert.
To call them out — to their face.
Yes, I’ve gotten fired from jobs.
Yes, I’ve endured hardships because of doing so.
But, here’s the thing.
What I preserved was my conscience - my moral compass - my alignment with reality and integrity - my dignity - my self-respect - my innate sense of fairness and justice - my trust and faith in the Cosmic Harmony nature of the Universe.
It’s actually become fun now after so many years of practice.
Truly!! Lol 🤗
Sure - at first I was quaking in my high heels to stand up to these much more powerful people - these petty tyrants who could and would and did exercise their power to ruin and destroy my basic survival.
Practicing our spiritual warrior skills is one of the most valuable tasks and lessons of life I’ve learned.
Sounds to me as if THIS is precisely what you, Valerie R. Masai-Aspaas , are doing yourself.
Kudos and congratulations to you.
Wishing you - and all those brave hearted warriors of light like you - for standing your ground, honoring your conscience, maintaining your allegiance to truth and reality, and strengthening the harmonious frequency of the universe.

I agree with nearly everything expressed here.
Please explain how the “new” manner in recognizing and teaching sexuality is a trojan horse for pedophelia?
When I was a kid they talked about nothing while some of us were abused anyway.
The first alarm bell is that we are teaching children to keep secrets from parents starting in Kindergarten. It doesn't come from the school board, rather it comes from the top down. Way way above the schools. Ideology is the opposite of thought...
